I have titled the work 'losing city, finding village'
30 years ago Shenzen City was a small fishing village with 30 000 people living in it ... today there are about 16 million people living there...This stark push from the village and pull to the cities is intensified in china but is a universal phenomenon...
The waterbuffalo, or the cow, is a powerful image as it holds allot of significance in different cultures, symbolizing rural life, wealth, status, holiness. The man who is leadng this waterbuffalo is on his cellhone, feeling very important and in control yet he is so small in comparison to the magnificence and emotional weight of the animal.
A reminder that we little humans have only to look behind us to acknowledge the real power and wealth of nature, the villages, the earth and start to look after these things.
Progress is good, the growth of cities is not a bad thing, it is a natural progression, but we need to be conscious of our effects and of what we are destroying in order to create them.
